The Training Seminar on Community Engagement to Counter Terrorism concluded
22 July 2011 – The three day training seminar on Community Engagement to Counter Terrorism that was organized by ICPAT in collaboration with the Center on Global Counterterrorism Cooperation (CGCC) was concluded today on the 21st July 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Representatives from Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda as well as the Republic of South Sudan took part. The officials were drawn from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior, Police, National Counter Terrorism Center, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Office of the President, Office of the Prime Minister, Internal Security Organization, State Law Office, and National Security Agency. The Director of Peace and Security Division of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Honorable Netsannet Asfaw, opened and made a speech on the meeting. Speeches were delivered by the representative of Embassy of Denmark, Ms. Pernille Mortensen, as these and similar past trainings were supported by the Government of Denmark, Commander Abebe Muluneh, the Acting Head of ICPAT, and Mr. James Cockayne, the co-Director of CGCC.
During the three days seminar, several experts from SBP Law, Kingston Race and Equalities Council (KREC), Somali Observatory of Conflict and Violence Prevention, Kenya Muslim Youth Alliance, and the Government of Japan shared their experience. The training was believed to be successful in terms of sharing experience and learning ways of engaging the community in countering terrorism. The member states made a presentation on how they currently treat community engagement as an aspect of counter terrorism. After evaluation and feedback of the different sessions, the training was concluded in handing out certificates to the participants. (End)
