August 14, 2008 - The Kenya police have denied reports that the US Federal Bureau of Investigations(FBI) is assisting its anti-terror unit in hunting down Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, a suspected terrorist wanted by police for the twin bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in August of 1998. Addressing reporters Tuesday in Nairobi, police spokesman Erick Kiraithe said that Kenyan security forces are competent enough to apprehend Mohammed who last month managed to escape from them from a safe house in Mombasa, and is still on the run. He denied reports that the FBI had launched a parallel hunt in the country for Mohammed after the US authorities started raising doubts whether Kenya really has the capacity to arrest the terrorist after letting him escape from them. \"Kenya is not getting any backing from any foreign power in arraigning Mohammed\", stressed the spokesman. Kiraithe further denied reports that an anti-terror police agent tipped off Mohammed, leading to his escape. The reports further claimed that an officer at the anti-terror unit was on the payroll of Mohammed. The spokesman denied the media reports and said that the offer of the US$ 5 million that will lead to the capture of Mohammed is still open. (from the African Press Agency)
