August 18, 2008 - The ICPAT training needs assessment mission to Kenya and Uganda which was carried out from August 14-18, 2008 has been completed.
Commander Abebe Muluneh, IGAD Senior Training Coordinator who undertook the mission, reported that the work was satisfactorily concluded. He held discussions with officials and experts in both Kenya and Uganda who identified key training areas in which they expect support from ICPAT.
So far ICPAT has concentrated on providing a four-week long counter terrorism course for law enforcement officials and officers in the IGAD region first in Uganda and then separately for officers from Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia. The course will also be carried out in Djibouti and Kenya.
IGAD member states have, however, expressed interest in shorter and more focused courses and it is to identify the needs of member states that ICPAT decided to carry out the training needs assessment mission, first in Sudan and now in Kenya and Uganda.
The assessment will also cover Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia following which an enhanced training program will be prepared to b implemented in 2009 and 2010.
