August 23, 2008 - The ICPAT organized border control workshop involving officials and experts from Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia was successfully concluded in Nairobi, Kenya last week. Held on August 21 and 22 at the Silver Spring Hotel, the meeting was attended by 30 officials and experts from national institutions dealing with border management, law enforcement, defense, customs and foreign affairs. Participants discussed reports on the state of border management prepared by experts from the three countries covering the Ethiopia/Somalia and the Kenya/Somalia border. From the reports it was clear that much needed to be done in all the countries and more particularly in Somalia if serious efforts at border management are to be effected. The Ugandan experience relating to border management was presented at the meeting, and a scholar from Nairobi University addressed participants on the subject of terrorism and its impact on international relations. The meeting was closed by Kenya's Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Richard Onyonka who informed participants that it was necessary to look again into the possibiility of adopting legislation countering terrorism in Kenya that would be acceptable and understandable to the various sectors of the population.
