November 8, 2008 - The African Union has condemned the attack on the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) Burundi contingent on November 7, 2008.
The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Jean Ping, currently attending the Regional Summit in Nairobi on the situation in DRC learned with deep concern about the bomb attack on AMISOM Burundi contingent in which one Medical Officer lost his leg.
The statement said that the Chairperson of the commission strongly condemns this cowardly attack on peacekeepers specially Medical Doctors whose mandate includes provision of medical assistance to the desperate Somali population. The objective of these attacks perpetrated by the enemies of peace is to undermine the peace process which is gaining momentum.
The statement added that the Chairperson of the AU Commission calls on all peace loving Somalis to join the AU in condemning these barbaric acts and in isolating these elements opposed to peace and stability in Somalia.
It said these acts will neither intimidate nor deter the AU from resolutely continuing to promote reconciliation, dialogue and lasting peace in Somalia.
