April 28, 2009 - A roundtable to discuss the phenomenon of piracy off the Somali coast and what approaches should best be used to deal with it was held at the ICPAT Office this afternoon. The 90 minute brainstorming session was attended by 25 representatives of IGAD member states and partner countries. Russia, Japan, China and Turkey also sent diplomats to the meeting. ICPAT Head Ambassador Hiruy Amanuel informed those present of the soon to be released ICPAT report entitled "Impact of Piracy on IGAD member states" and highlighted some of the points made in the report on such matters as pirate identity, modus operandi, impact of an dresponse to piracy, factors that have led to this phenomenon, the international deployment, political and military options, possible future scenarios and recommendations. The report is to be tabled at a meeting of the meeting of Foreign Ministers of IGAD member states due to be held in June 2009.(ICPAT Information)
