The ICPAT Program Head and senior researchers of the Program accepted an invitation for a UK sponsored familiarization visit of British institutions dealing with CT in London between in early July. The four-person team had meetings in a number of UK institutions such as:

  • Foreign and Commonwealth Office
  • Home Office
  • Metropolitan Police
  • Department of Defense
  • DIFD
  • Department of Transport (Transport Security)
  • Charities Commission
  • Commonwealth Secretariat
  • Amicus Legal Consultants

The visit has enabled the team to meet a wide range of experienced professionals who deal in various ways with the counter terrorism effort. A number of possibilities regarding future cooperation with ICPAT were discussed, including as resource persons in meetings and training sessions ranging through all the components of ICPAT. The possibilities for greater UK professional engagement with ICPAT are high and the willingness is definitely present.

In similar news, Richard Barno, Senior Researcher- Border Management visited the office of the International Organization of Migration (IOM) in Geneva also in July. He met with officials from the:

  • International Migration Law and Legal Affairs
  • External Relations (sub-Saharan Africa)
  • Migration Health
  • Migration Management Services
  • Emergency and Crisis Division
  • North Africa, Middle East and Gulf States
departments and gained detailed information on the work of the IOM, a key partner institution for ICPAT.

Discussions included the holding of joint events with ICPAT in the IGAD region, the possibility of participating in each others seminars, and on joint training on specific subjects for border officials.
