Facilitators Meeting on Border Field Research conducted
21 February 2011 - Border Facilitators Meeting on Field Research for Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda was held on February 10, 2011 at ICPAT office in Addis Ababa. The meeting focused on the discussion for conducting researches and workshops on border management on the Kenya/Tanzania; Sudan/Egypt; Sudan/Chad; Uganda/Tanzania and Djibouti/Ethiopia borders.
The participants were drawn from the member states of Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, and Uganda that are involved in the border security and counter terrorism areas, specifically in attendance were participants from the Police, Immigration, and the National Counter Terrorism coordinating Agencies.
The participants discussed and agreed to the ICPAT border security and management activities for 2011 and also to hold the Djibouti/Ethiopia joint border workshop to discuss improvements on the management of the common border. It was noted that comprehensive filed research on the Sudan/Egypt, Kenya/Tanzania, Sudan/Chad, and Sudan/DRC borders be undertaken and followed by workshops at which the findings will be validated and recommendations on the improvement of security and management of these borders made. The profile of persons to conduct the field research and border studies was agreed on as was the facilitative role to be played by those in attendance at the meeting.
Presentations were also made by invited experts on stemming the growth of radicalization focusing on the efforts by the government of Nigeria in dealing with “Boko Haram” and the role of civil society in counter radicalization. (End)
