24 June 2011 - ICPAT conducted a Kenya-Tanzania Border workshop on 22-23 June 2011 t Mombasa Continental Resort, in Mombasa, Kenya. Mombasa brought together participants and experts from various Kenyan government agencies that are engaged in managing border points; it included the Immigration, Foreign Affairs, Kenya Revenue Authority, The Military, The Kenya Police, ast Africa Community, Kenya Wildlife Service, NCTC, and Office of the President.
The workshop subjected the field research by Kenyan field researcher to experts on the Kenya-Tanzania border. It came up with workshop recommendations on ways in which the management of the Kenya-Tanzania border can be improved.
The opening remarks were given by ICPAT Acting Head Commander Abebe Muluneh who thanked all the participants for turning up. He said it is ICPAT’s priority to minimize border related conflicts in the region. He informed participants that the workshop ought to come up with recommendations that would be presented to the government for action.
The Director of NCTC, Mr. Isaac Ochieng noted that the war against terrorism was gradually being won but it still poses a challenge in the region as it is a threat to socio-economic development. He highlighted the fact that terrorists use our border points when going to execute attacks and cited the case of Kampala bombings. He also affirmed that terrorist activities go hand in hand with other criminal activities and said the workshop was timely. The workshop was also graced by the presence of and presentation by Dr. Martin Mbugua Kimani, Director of CEWARN. Dr. Kimani emphasized that as the countries in the region embrace integration and open their borders to facilitate trade and economic boom, it is the responsibility of each country to step up efforts of improving its security and better management of its borders. He said more integration means more security challenges and more trade means more security to guarantee that trade.
