21 December 2011 - The IGAD Security Sector Program successfully organised a 3 day residential workshop on the Uganda/Tanzania border for Uganda border officials between the 18th and 21st December 2011. The Meeting held in Masaka, 140 Kilometres South of Kampala, also included a field trip by all participants to the Mutukula Border Control Point on the Uganda Tanzania border.

The meeting was attended by 16 Ugandan border officials from the Security departments (Internal, External and Military), Police Counterterrorism, Foreign affairs, Immigration and Customs. The meeting received a field report commissioned by ISSP on the security and management of the Uganda/Tanzania border and made recommendations on enhancing the effectiveness of the border to counter the movement of terrorists. It received expert presentations on strategies to counter radicalization and pitfalls to avoid in terrorism investigations a local and regional expert respectively.

At the field trip to the border, the participants paid courtesy calls on the Immigration, customs, Bureau of Standards and Security (Police, Military and Intelligence) offices. The offices visited provided the participants with briefings on their work and the challenges they face at the border. It also included demonstrations on the use of the equipment at the disposal of the officials to aide in the work. (END)
